The regular league season is set to kick-off on Sunday 5 June with Newell’s away to Javier Sanguinetti’s old club Banfield.
Newell’s Old Boys has a new club president. Dr Ignacio Astore, a medical professional who was once employed by the club as the team’s doctor, received the most votes in the twice-postponed club elections on Sunday.
The death has been announced of trailblazing coach José Yudica at the age of 85.
Yudica, known as “El Piojo” (The Louse) was a Rosario native who started his playing career at Newell’s Old Boys in 1954 before playing for a number of clubs in Argentina such as Boca Juniors and Vélez Sarsfield.
Newell’s Old Boys has revealed its new shirt for the upcoming 2021-22 season. The red and black Umbro design is initially offered without a sponsor and is a tribute shirt to the Newell’s side of 1991 who won the Argentine Championship at La Bombonera, the home of Boca Juniors.
50-year-old Gamboa returns to Newell’s for his second spell as manager, 13 years after his first spell. He won 3 titles as a player with Newell’s as part of Bielsa’s all-conquering side of the 1990s.
Newell’s Old Boys have been drawn in Group F of the 2021 Copa Sudamericana. Joining La Lepra in the group are the Chilean side Palestino, Brazilian newcomers Atlético Goianiense and either Libertad or Atlético Nacional, depending on who wins the second-leg of their qualifying play-off.
