The death of Horacio García has been announced by Newell’s Old Boys. The club’s Director of Football died suddenly on Monday 2 January. Early reports suggest he suffered a heart attack.

He had taken up the position of Director of Football in November on the recommendation of manager Gabriel Heinze and had overseen four new signings announced by Newell’s in recent weeks.

García was a lifelong Newell’s Old Boys fan and friend of Marcelo Bielsa. He worked with Bielsa at Vélez Sarsfield in the 1990s and later recommended Pablo Quiroga, who would go on to become assistant manager at Leeds United, to El Loco.

May he Rest in Peace.
