Aníbal Moreno joins Racing on loan

The 21-year-old midfielder signs with La Academia until 31 December 2021

Aníbal Moreno has left Newell’s Old Boys and joined domestic rivals Racing Club on loan until the end of 2021.

Racing have paid $1million to secure the loan and will have the right to buy Moreno outright if the loan is a success. A future fee of $6million has been reported to make the deal permanent and Newell’s will gain 10% of any future sale to Europe.

The deal to send Moreno to a club in Argentina has surprised Newell’s fans, who have long tipped him to be a future star with a career outside of his home country.

Moreno made his debut with Newell’s in February 2019, coming on as a sub in a league match against San Mártin de San Juan.

A creative box-to-box midfielder, he starred at underage level for Argentina, playing in the FIFA U20 World Cup and winning the Pan American Games with Argentina U23s.

Known for his ability to score from long range, his only Newell’s goal came outside the box against San Lorenzo in February 2020.

The fee received by Newell’s for the loan is likely to be used to fund the return of Cristian Lema to the club, along with the purchase of Racing striker Jonatan Cristaldo.
