Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 14th February 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 14th February 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United were beaten 4-2 by Arsenal away from home on 14 February. At one point they were 4-0 down but rallied in the second half to grab two goals back. It wasn’t enough for Bielsa’s side but they are still fairly comfortable in 11th position in the Premier League.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi played a full 90 minutes in Barcelona’s 2-0 defeat to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on 10 February.

On 13 February in the league, he was on scintillating form as he scored two fantastic goals in Barcelona’s emphatic 5-1 win over Alavés.

Lucas Boyé played a full 90 minutes in Elche’s 3-1 defeat away to Celta Vigo in the league on 12 February.


FRANCE

Mauricio Pochettino‘s PSG moved forward to the next round of the Coupe de France with a 0-1 away win over Caen on 10 February. On 13 February, they defeated Nice 2-1 in the league.

Mauro Icardi was an unused sub against Caen but he started and played a full 90 minutes, providing the perfect headed assist for Moise Kean’s 76th minute winner against Nice.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi played for 78 minutes in Torino’s 0-0 draw with Genoa on 13 February.

Enzo Barrenechea played a full 90 minutes in Juventus U19s 2-2 away draw with Genoa U19s on 10 February.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez got a full 90 minutes under his belt for Ajax in their 2-1 win over PSV in the Quarter Finals of the KNVB Cup on 10 February. He was an unused substitute in the league on 13 February as Ajax overcame Heracles (0-2).


GREECE

Daniel Mancini played for 58 minutes before being substituted in Aris Thessaloniki’s scoreless draw with Panetolikos on 14 February.


CYPRUS

Emanuel Dening scored from the spot for Paralimni but it wasn’t enough as they lost 2-1 to Paphos on 11 February. Dening played the full 90 minutes, as did ex-Newell’s man Adrian Lucero.


TURKEY

Nehuén Paz was an unused sub in Kayserispor’s 0-0 draw with Ankaragucu on 13 February.


SAUDI ARABIA

Ever Banega scored from the spot and assisted another for the second game in a row as Al-Shabab clocked up another four goals in their away win at Al-Nassr on 13 February (0-4).

MEXICO

Nahuel Guzmán put in a Man of the Match performance in Tigres’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup Final on 11 February.

Andrés Lillini’s Pumas were beaten 1-0 by Toluca in the Liga MX on 14 February.

Santiago Solari’s Club América defeated Querétaro 2-1 on 14 February to move level on points at the top of the Liga MX with leaders Toluca.


CHILE

Juan Pablo Vojvoda‘s Unión La Calera made it 6 games without a win and none since they qualified for the Copa Libertadores after they lost 2-3 to Curicó Unido on the final day of the Chilean Primera División.

Roberto Sensini‘s Everton won 1-0 against Hauchipato and finished the season in 12th position.

Martín Tonso was a late 82nd minute substitute in La Serena’s 0-2 home defeat to Audax Italiano.


PARAGUAY

Luis Leal was an unused substitute in Sol de América’s 1-0 away defeat to Nacional on 10 February.
