La Lepra will face Vélez away in the opening fixture before welcoming Boca to the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
Newell’s Old Boys have been placed in Zone B of the upcoming Copa de la Liga after the draw for the new tournament took place in Buenos Aires on 3 February.
26 teams, split into two groups of 13, will contest the competition with promoted Sarmiento and Platense added to the list of teams who competed in last season’s Copa Diego Maradona. The top four teams from each group will progress to a quarter-finals stage.
Each team will play their rival in a “Clásico” fixture with Newell’s set to play Rosario Central away on 2 May.
The new competition for 2021 was set to be called the Copa Diego Maradona once more until AFA decided not to use the name due to an ongoing dispute over the image rights and trademark of the deceased footballing legend.
Zone A & B of the Copa de la Liga 2021
The competition begins on the weekend of 12/13/14 February with Vélez Sarsfield our first opponents (away), just six weeks since Newell’s lost to El Fortín 0-1 at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
A tricky opening few fixtures will see Newell’s then play two opponents that they also faced just weeks ago in last season’s Copa Diego Maradona: Boca Juniors and Talleres.
