Newell’s Old Boys v Atlético Goianiense
Group F, CONMEBOL Copa Sudamericana
25th May 2021
🏟️ Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, Rosario
Newell’s Old Boys’ home game on Tuesday night against Atlético Goianiense could be the last time that manager Germán Burgos takes the team.
Burgos only arrived in Rosario in March but his tenure has been disappointing with Newell’s finishing bottom of Group of the Copa de la Liga, knocked out of the Copa Argentina by Sarmiento and on the verge of elimination from the Copa Sudamericana.
Elimination will be confirmed unless both of Tuesday’s Group F games finish in home wins for Palestino (vs group leaders Libertad) and Newell’s.
It’s a highly unlikely scenario but it does give Burgos and his team something to fight for.
There was some respite for El Mono following an impressive 3-1 win over Palestino last Thursday where a young team was entrusted to put in a solid home performance after a turbulent few weeks. Goalscorers Ramiro Sordo and Nicolás Castro are likely to hold their places in the team along with 18-year-old Patricio Acevedo who assisted on his debut for La Lepra.
Atlético Goianiense have only scored 3 goals in the competition so far but find themselves in 2nd position in the group after 3 draws and 2 wins. The key to their success has been a rock solid defence, having conceded just 1 goal in 5 games – a consolation for Libertad in their surprise 2-1 victory over the Paraguayans.
If this turns out to be El Mono Burgos’ farewell at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, the club’s leadership will have plenty of time to hire a replacement with competitive action in Argentina not returning for Newell’s until late July at the earliest.
Some names have been dropped already with reports saying that the club will turn to an ex-player such as Darío Franco or Fernando Gamboa to lead the team into the 2021/2022 season.
