Patronato v Newell’s Old Boys
Liga AFA
2nd August 2021
🏟️ Estadio Presbítero Bartolomé Grella, Paraná
Riding high from a 4-2 home victory against Estudiantes last Thursday, Fernando Gamboa’s Newell’s Old Boys could make it 9 points from 12 in the new Liga AFA season if they beat Patronato on Monday night in Paraná.
Overall, it’s been a much improved Newell’s side after a disastrous first half of 2021. Gamboa has already settled on his preferred eleven and midfielder Nicolás Castro, who looks to be having a breakout season, is one of the first names on the team sheet having already contributed 2 goals and 3 assists in 3 games. Ignacio Scocco looks to be somewhat back to his best, having struggled under El Mono Burgos, and young Justo Giani is starting to show Gamboa that he deserves to be a starter having clocked 3 assists and a goal in the Estudiantes game.
The hosts have an identical record to Newell’s, with 2 wins and 1 loss, but come into Monday’s game off the back of a 2-0 defeat to unbeaten Independiente on Wednesday night. They’ve had an extra day to prepare for the Newell’s game and will be hoping to continue their home form that saw them defeat Sarmiento 2-0.
