Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 23rd May 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

We feature players who have scored, assisted, were involved in an incident or reached a landmark in the previous week. We’ll also track the progress of ex-Newell’s players or coaches who are now managers, where relevant.


Bielsa’s Leeds finish season in 9th with a 3-1 victory over West Brom

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United confirmed 9th place in the Premier League with a final day 3-1 victory over West Brom. It’s been a highly successful campaign for El Loco whose side ended the season with four wins in a row.


Pochettino’s PSG secure Coupe de France but then fall short of league title as Lille celebrate

Mauricio Pochettino‘s Paris St Germain won the Coupe de France on 19 May, beating Monaco 0-2 in the final with one of the goals scored by Mauro Icardi. In the league on Sunday, they did all the could by beating Brest 0-2 away from home on the final day of the Ligue 1 season in France but Lille were crowned champions after victory of Angers. El Poche ends his first season at PSG, he only joined in January, with two trophies but without the league championship and falling short of the Champions League final.


Messi is top scorer in La Liga for the fifth year in a row

Lionel Messi scored 30 goals in 35 games as the La Liga season came to an end in Spain. He picked up the “Pichichi” trophy, given to the highest scorer, for the fifth year in a row and his eighth time receiving the award.


Lucas Boyé helps save Elche from relegation with goal in Athletic win

Lucas Boyé helped to save Elche from relegation from La Liga with a goal in their final day victory over Athletic Club. Boyé finished the season with 7 goals in 34 games as his side escaped the drop.


Martín Bellotti scores promotion-winning goal for CF Intercity

Martín Bellotti, on loan from Newell’s to Spanish side CF Intercity, scored their promotion-winning goal as they reached the fourth tier of Spanish football with a win over Elche Illicitano. What a moment for the 19-year-old who has played for Argentina U17s.


A goal and two assists for Éver Banega in 5-1 thrashing of Al-Ain

Éver Banega was involved in 3 of Al-Shabab’s 5 goals scored against Al-Ain on 19 May. His defence splitting pass from his own half allowed Sebá to open the scoring in the first half while he then scored from the penalty spot himself and assisted the final goal from a corner, scored by Chilean Igor Lichnovsky.


Maxi Urruti on the scoresheet again for Houston

Maxi Urruti scored his second goal in three games as he helped Houston Dynamo to a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps. Lurking at the back post from a corner, Urruti hit a volley first-time that rattled the back of the net.


Vojvoda wins the Campeonato Cearense with Fortaleza

Two weeks after taking over as manager, Juan Pablo Vojvoda won a trophy with Brazilian side Fortaleza. They lifted the Campeonato Cearense after beating Ceará on penalties in the final on 23 May.


Horacio Orzán sees red in Copa Sudamericana

Horacio Orzán was sent off for FBC Melgar in the Copa Sudamericana as they lost 1-0 to group leaders Athletico PR of Brazil. Melgar look set to qualify for the group so Orzán is likely to be available again to play in the knockout rounds.


Fydriszewski and Figueroa both record assists in another good week for Bidoglio’s Aucas

Héctor Bidoglio‘s finished the week with two wins – one in the Copa Sudamericana and one in the league. On 20 May, Victor Figueroa unselfishly set up Roberto Ordóñez for the opener in a 3-0 victory over Metropolitanos of Venezuela while on 23 May in the league, Francisco Fydriszewski was the provider as Jhonny Quinonez opened the scoring in a 2-0 win over Deportivo Cuenca.


Luis Leal scores against Libertad in Paraguay

Luis Leal helped Sol de América to a stunning win over league leaders Libertad (our rivals in the Copa Sudamericana). La Pantera with a fierce half-volley equalised on 63 minutes after Libertad had taken the lead while Leal’s side scored the winner from the spot ten minutes later.
