Former captain and manager of La Lepra will replace Sebastián Peratta and will be tasked with appointing the next Newell’s manager.
Lucas Bernardi, the midfielder who played nearly 300 games for Newell’s Old Boys over two spells, is the favourite to be appointed as the club’s new Director of Football.
The role is now vacant following the departure, albeit not officially confirmed, of Sebastián Peratta.
If appointed, Bernardi will be tasked with finding a replacement for manager Germán Burgos who will leave the club in the coming weeks.
According to Impulso Negocios, two other names that were in the frame for the role were also two former club players: Pablo Guiñazú and Gabriel Batistuta. Bernardi is now the board’s first choice but if they fail to reach an agreement with the ex-Monaco and Marseille man, they may return to talks with Guiñazú. A decision is expected to be made, in consultation with fan groups, this weekend.
Since retiring, Bernardi has had a number of positions as head coach, at Newell’s, Arsenal, Godoy Cruz, Estudiantes and most recently, Belgrano, but this would be his first time being appointed to a business leadership role at a club.
