Newell’s Old Boys lost for the first time this season, going down in the Clásico Rosarino by a first-half headed goal from Alejo Véliz.
In what was an ugly game, Newell’s wasted two huge chances to score at both the start of the match and the end of the match. The returning Pablo Pérez hit the post from close-range as Central defenders tried to guard the line in the absence of goalkeeper Gaspar Servio while substitute Nazareno Funez blazed his shot wide from the six-yard box in injury-time.
Despite La Lepra having the majority of possession and chances, they failed to break down the Central defence and never recovered from the shock of Véliz’s header looping into the goal.
A first loss in nine matches sees Newell’s now in 5th position having been overtaken by a number of teams at the weekend.
