Newell’s Old Boys drew for the third time in a row on Saturday night when a 0-0 draw with Racing Club was played out at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
A young Newell’s side, with an average age of 24.6 years, had to count on 18-year-old Franco Herrera in goal after first-choice keeper Ramiro Macagno was lost to injury in the last game. Herrera did more than enough to make the spot his own in the coming weeks, bagging the Man of the Match award after a total of 4 fine saves to keep the game scoreless.
Newell’s struggled in attack again and had to rely on the counter-attack to try and penetrate the opposition box but often, the counters broke down and the home side failed to scare Racing’s goalkeeper Gastón Gómez though Panchito González did force him into a save at close-range at his near post in the second half.
While The Lepers won’t end this game week as clear league leaders, they go into Thursday’s Clásico Rosarino joint top with Atlético Tucumán, Godoy Cruz and Argentinos Juniors who all won at the weekend to reach the summit.
