Newell’s Old Boys succumbed to a second defeat on the bounce, going down by a single-goal to Defensa y Justicia at home on Monday night.
Newell’s dominated the match but finished with just 1 goal from 21 shots, a symptom of a weakening prowess up front. El Halcón took the lead after just 4 minutes when Nicolas Fernández poked the ball past Franco Herrera after Willer Ditta failed to clear a low cross from the left.
Herrera misjudged the flight of the ball for Defensa’s second goal early in the second-half, the ball taking a big deflection off Ditta after a Duarte shot and flying into the left bottom corner. Newell’s tried and pushed to get back into the game but when Juan Garro flicked the ball into the net from close-range after a goalmouth scramble on 94 minutes, it was far too late in the day to mount a comeback for La Lepra.
