Newell’s Old Boys suffered a 3-goal defeat to a much-stronger River Plate side on Saturday night, slipping further down the table. In the thick of a horrible run of form, it’s now been 8 games since Javier Sanguinetti’s side last won.
Pablo Solari hit a double in a first-half where the home side converted all of their chances. The occasion seemed like it had smothered Newell’s; ineffective forward Djorkaeff Reasco was no match for the River defence and our gameplan wasn’t helped when losing Leonel Vangioni and Julián Fernández to an already-increasing injury list.
Pablo Pérez offered La Lepra a glimmer of hope in the second-half when he headed the ball into the net after Armani had saved from substitute Funez at close-range. The hope was short-lived however, and River put another two goals in quick succession past Lautaro Morales to kill the game. Javier Pinola headed in from a River corner and Matías Suárez scored the goal of the match when he curled the ball into the corner to finish it.
With that result, the on-pitch crisis deepens for Newell’s. After a promising start to the season, there now seems to be no way for Javier Sanguinetti to plug this hole.
