Newell’s Old Boys broke a run of three league defeats in a row but it was just one-point gained in a scoreless draw against Colón on Sunday night at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
Goalkeeper Lautaro Morales will have been pleased to have kept a clean sheet on his debut and he had central defenders Cristian Lema, Willer Ditta and Gustavo Velázquez to thank for a strong performance at the back that kept Colón’s chances to a minimum. Ramón Ábila had the best of the away side’s efforts and could have helped his side to an away win but for a series of lacklustre finishes.
At the other end, the chances weren’t as clear cut for Newell’s. Long spells of possession often ended with wayward shots and Ignacio Chicco was rarely tested in the Colón net. Ramiro Sordo and Francisco González both wasted opportunities and Genaro Rossi, who came on in the first half in place of the injured Juan Garro, rarely touched the ball and suffered from a lack of service from midfield.
Newell’s might fret over the loss of Garro and Willer Ditta, who also had to be withdrawn due to injury, especially with such a difficult challenge away to River Plate coming next for La Lepra.
