Highlights: Newell’s 2-0 Lanús

Newell’s Old Boys celebrated a first win in nine league matches on Wednesday after overcoming struggling Lanús at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.

19-year-old Brian Aguirre was hugely impressive in his first start for the home side and tested goalkeeper Fernando Monetti from long-range on a number occasions in the first half. It was his corner that gave Newell’s their first goal when Franco Ortellado inadvertently headed the ball past his own keeper when trying to clear.

Newell’s added to the opener before half-time when Pablo Pérez superbly picked out Guillermo Balzi at the end of a slick passing move. Balzi made no mistake from close-range for his second goal of the season.

It looked like all of La Lepra’s good work could have been reversed in the second-half when Nazareno Funez saw his yellow card changed to a red for an elbow on Diego Braghieri. But Newell’s rallied and were able to see out the win despite being a man down for 40 minutes and on the receiving end of an erratic performance from referee Fernando Espinoza.
