Newell’s Old Boys bounced back from the defeat at Arsenal by winning all three points at home to Central Córdoba (Santiago del Estero) on Wednesday at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
In a close game, it was the introduction of club captain Maxi Rodríguez on 66 minutes that made the difference with La Fiera stepping up to take a free-kick with his first touch, and scoring a wonderful goal past Cesar Rigamonti in the opposition net.
Rigamonti had to be at his best to keep Nacho Scocco out in the first half and both Tomás Jacob and Facundo Mansilla made goal-saving interventions at the other end. The returning Franco Escobar impressed after coming on as a substitute but it was the impact of another substitute that will take all the headlines with 40-year-old Maxi Rodríguez pushing Newell’s forward as he has done so many times in his career.
