Newell’s Old Boys won a brilliant point at La Bombonera on Tuesday night having managed to to keep a clean sheet against a strong Boca Juniors side.
The match was postponed from Sunday due to heavy rain so Newell’s named the same team again but were forced to replace Ignacio Scocco with Justo Giani up front just moments before kick-off after Scocco was injured in the warm-up.
Both teams exchanged good chances in the first-half with Newell’s keeper Ramiro Macagno making a fine save from Eduardo Salvio’s header while Juan Garro drew a stop from Agustín Rossi at the other end after he found himself some space near the six-yard box.
Giani could have scored in the second-half but hit his effort straight at Rossi who saved the follow-up too. Boca unleashed a barrage of shots on the Newell’s goal towards the end of the game but their attacking pressure didn’t bear fruit as the Lepers held strong to hold onto a valuable point.
Maxi Rodríguez, who appeared as a second-half substitute, was clapped off the field by the home crowd at the end in what was the final away game of his career.
