Newell’s Old Boys suffered a tenth defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon, going down to the league’s bottom team Arsenal de Sarandí.
Defensive mistakes and an erratic performance in goal from Ramiro Macagno were to blame for the loss. Caretaker manager Adrián Taffarel made two changes to the side who defeated Unión with Calcaterra and Garro coming in for the injured Cristian Lema and young forward Román Bravo.
Arsenal took the lead in the first-half with Alejo Antilef taking advantage of uncertainty in the Newell’s defence in dealing with a long goal kick from Alejandro Medina. Nacho Scocco got La Lepra back into it early in the second-half with a nice toe-poked finish but Arsenal took control in the last quarter of an hour after Newell’s tried and failed to break them down.
Bruno Sepúlveda headed into an empty net when Ramiro Macagno completely missed a cross from the left while substitute Brian Farioli scored a magnificent free-kick in injury time to give Arsenal a two-goal lead but it could have been by more as the chances came thick and fast for the home side towards the end.
