After a promising away win at the start of the week, Newell’s couldn’t repeat the feat and fell to in-form Tigre in Rosario on Thursday night.
The league’s top goalscorer Mateo Retegui showed no signs of slowing down, scoring the game’s both goals in the first-half, one from open play and one from the penalty spot.
Newell’s were offered a big chance to get back into the game when Tigre were reduced to ten men when Ezequiel Fernández received a second yellow card after 42 minutes but La Lepra failed to make the breakthrough.
Juan Manuel García’s poor missed penalty late-on capped off a flat performance and improvement is needed ahead of Sunday’s huge game against title-chasing Boca Juniors.
