Newell’s Old Boys put in one of the performances of the season to beat Abel Balbo’s Central Córdoba (Santiago del Estero) on Monday night at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades.
Newell’s, who returned to a back 5, played some great stuff throughout with Francisco González shining in attack. Indeed, it was “Panchito” who was involved in the Newell’s opener, making sure La Lepra claimed a goal after Iván Ramírez cleared the ball, which was later judged to have been over the line and deemed an own-goal.
Willer Ditta added a magnificent second, traversing up from the back to play some nice link-up play with Juan Garro before chipping the goalkeeper to cap off a fine move. With 10 minutes to go, youngster Marcelo Esponda finished things off with a low drive to grab his first professional goal for Newell’s.
La Lepra now need just 3 points from their final 3 games to secure a spot in next season’s Copa Sudamericana.
