Boca Juniors made it a home victory on Monday night at La Bombonera in the penultimate game of the season as Gabriel Heinze’s Newell’s Old Boys played catch-up to goals scored either side of half-time.
Newell’s keeper Lucas Hoyos was undoubtedly at fault for the opener when he palmed Valentín Barco’s cross into his own net after 21 minutes. The second was created by Boca straight from kick-off in the second-half with Barco involved again. His floated cross was headed home by Cristian Medina.
Jorge Recalde fired home a consolation for Newell’s in injury-time after he had already had another goal ruled out. It was the 5th time that he has put the ball in the back of the net this season only for the goal to have been ruled out by the officials and his 92nd minute strike was his 5th legal goal of the season.
Newell’s now face 2nd-placed Talleres in the last Liga AFA game of the season at home on Friday before a massive Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 First Leg against the Brazilian club Corinthians on 1 August.
