Yonathan Cabral signs for Newell’s Old Boys

The 28-year-old central defender joins on loan from Atlético Tucumán.

Newell’s Old Boys have made their first signing of the off-season, bringing former Racing Club defender Yonathan Cabral to the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.

Cabral joins from Atlético Tucumán on a one-year loan deal with an initial charge of $50,000 and an option to make the deal permanent for $1.1 million in the future.

The defender is known to Newell’s fans since clashing with Rodrigo Salinas in December 2019. Having come to blows and with punches thrown, both men were sent off in a 2-2 draw.

Salinas has since moved on from Newell’s so there’s no risk of a rematch when Cabral arrives later this week.

Cabral and Salinas come to blows in December 2019

Our new signing started his career at Racing Club, winning the championship in 2014, before loan spells at Olimpo and Atlético Tucumán, before signing permanently for Tucumán in 2019.

He has made 160 professional appearances and has experience playing in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

He is the first arrival of an expected new-look Newell’s defence as Frank Kudelka looks to clear-out players like Fabricio Fontanini and Manuel Guanini who underperformed in the most recent domestic campaign.

Yonathan, welcome to the famous Newell’s Old Boys!
