Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 1st February 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 1st February 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United had an outstanding win at Leicester City, beating Brendan Rodgers’ side 1-3 with goals from Stuart Dallas, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi scored twice last week. In the Copa Del Rey on 27 January, he netted the winner on 69 minutes in a game that finished 1-2 to Barcelona against Rayo Vallecano.

A few days later, Messi scored a glorious free-kick in the 2-1 home win against Athletic Club in La Liga.

Lucas Boyé played a full 90 minutes for Elche in the 1-0 defeat to Valencia on 30 January.


FRANCE

It was a disappointing week for Mauricio Pochettino who witnessed his PSG side fall to a late defeat at Lorient (3-2).

Mauro Icardi played the full 90 minutes in that game for PSG, winning one of his side’s two penalties, which were both converted by Neymar.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi played a full 90 minutes in Torino’s 1-1 draw at home to Fiorentina.

Nehuén Paz (Bologna) was an unused substitute in Bologna’s 1-2 home defeat to AC Milan but left for Turkey the next day, joining Kayserispor on loan until the end of the season.

Enzo Barrenechea scored his first goals in Italian football for the Juventus U19 team. The ex-Newell’s youngster converted a penalty in his side’s 1-3 win at Ascoli on 27 January while a few days later he made it 2 in 2 by scoring in a 2-0 win for Juventus U19s over Lazio U19s.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez came on as a 70th minute substitute in Ajax’s 3-1 home win against Willem II on 28 January. He started and played the full 90 minutes in another win for Ajax in the league – this time away at AZ Alkmaar on 30 January (0-3).


GREECE

Daniel Mancini was a late substitute (72 minutes) in Aris’ 1-0 win against AEL Larissa on 26 January but he missed the 2-1 defeat to Asteras Tripolis a few days later on 30 January.


CYPRUS

Emanuel Dening and Adrian Lucero both started in Paralimni’s 1-0 away defeat at Doxa. They both also received yellow cards. Dening played a full 90 minutes but Lucero was withdrawn after 75 minutes.


MALTA

Federico Falcone opened the scoring for Birkirkara in their 4-1 thrashing of Lija Athletic on 31 January.


SAUDI ARABIA

Ever Banega played a full 90 minutes for Al-Shabab in their 2-4 away win at Al Wehda on 25 January. On 30 January, he played another full game as Al-Shabab won 2-3 away again – this time at Abha. Banega provided the assist from a corner for the opener, scored by the Chilean Igor Lichnovsky.

Cristian Lema played a full 90 minutes, receiving a yellow card, as Damac fell to another defeat (4-2 v Al-Raed) on 31 January.


MEXICO

Nahuel Guzmán played a full 90 minutes in Tigres’ 1-1 draw against Necaxa. Guzmán is now in Qatar with Tigres to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup where they’ll face South Korean side Ulsan on 4 February.

Andrés Lillini’s Pumas drew 0-0 with Atlas on 31 January.

Santiago Solari’s Club América defeated Juárez FC 2-0 on 27 January and then played out a 1-1 stalemate with Santos Laguna on 31 January.


CHILE

After achieving a first Copa Libertadores qualification in their history, it was two consecutive defeats for Juan Pablo Vojvoda‘s Unión La Calera who lost 1-2 at home to Deportes Iquique (28 January) and 2-1 away at relegation threatened Colo Colo on 31 January.
