Uruguyan defender Armando Méndez joins Newell’s

The 25-year-old right-back becomes Javier Sanguinetti’s first acquisition as Newell’s manager

Newell’s Old Boys have announced the signing of Armando Méndez from Uruguayan club Nacional. The right-back came through the youth system at the Montevideo club but made his full debut while on loan at Fénix in 2018.

He later broke into the first team at his parent club and played 76 times, scoring 3 goals and contributing 4 assists. He won the Uruguayan title with Nacional in 2019 and 2020 and has played in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

Nacional were disappointed with the manner in which he left the club, claiming on their official Twitter account that him and his agent failed to honour a verbal agreement to sign a new contract. The opportunity to play in the Argentine Primera División with Newell’s proved too attractive and he becomes Javier Sanguinetti’s first signing of the window.

Known as “Chiri” and “Hulk” in his home country for his impressive physique, Méndez has signed a 3-year contract at Newell’s and arrives on a free.

Welcome, Hulk!
