Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 26 October 2020

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 26 October 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United moved into 5th position in the Premier League after a magnificent 0-3 away win against Aston Villa. Forward Patrick Bamford scored all three goals.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi played the full 90 minutes but was left disappointed and with a yellow card to his name in Barcelona’s 1-3 El Clásico defeat to rivals Real Madrid.


FRANCE

Cristian Battocchio returned to action for Stade Brest but was on the end of a home defeat to Strasbourg. He was replaced after 71 minutes in the match which ended 0-3 to the away team.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi was an 89th minute substitute in Torino’s 3-3 draw with Sassuolo.

Fernando Forestieri came on as a second half substitute in Udinese’s 3-2 defeat to Fiorentina and provided the assist for their second goal, crossing a ball onto the head of Stefano Okaka but it was too little, too late for the Bianconeri.

Nehuén Paz was an unused substitute for Bologna in their 2-1 defeat to Lazio.

Enzo Barrenechea was an 89th minute substitute in Juventus u23s 0-1 win away to Lucchese. in Serie C.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez came on after 46 minutes for fellow Argentine Nicolás Tagliafico and scored one of Ajax’s 13 goals in their huge 0-13 win away to VVV Venlo in the Eredivisie.

Earlier in the week (21 October), Martínez impressed in the UEFA Champions League despite a 0-1 home defeat to Liverpool, receiving a rating of 7.4 from SofaScore after playing the whole match.


RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce grabbed a goal and an assist in Spartak’s 1-3 away win at Krasnodar as they went to the top of the table in the Russian Premier League. Free-scoring Ponce was also named as man of the match.


CYPRUS

Adrian Lucero started but was substituted in injury-time in the 0-0 draw between Omonia Nicosia and his side Enosis Neon Paralimniou.


SAUDI ARABIA

Éver Banega got off the mark for Al-Shabab, scoring from the penalty spot in a 2-2 draw with Al-Raed (23 October).


UNITED STATES

Maxi Urruti came on after 72 minutes for Montreal Impact but couldn’t do anything to stop them losing 3-1 to New York City FC.

Milton Valenzuela played a full 90 minutes in Columbus Crew’s 1-1 draw with Houston Dynamo.


MEXICO

Nahuél Guzmán played a full 90 minutes in Tigres’ 1-1 draw with Juárez.

On 22 October, Luis Leal came on as a sub after 55 minutes in Club Tijuana’s 0-1 defeat in the Copa MX against Monterrey. On 25 October, he started for the Xolos 2-0 defeat to Toluca in the Liga MX. Still no goals in 8 appearances for La Pantera.


ECUADOR

Victor Figueroa laid on an assist for ex-Newell’s man Lisandro Alzugaray in Aucas’ 1-4 away win at Mushuc Runa.

Braian Rivero came on after 72 minutes for Independiente del Valle in their 2-0 defeat of Barcelona SC in the Copa Libertadores on 22 October. Three days later, he again appeared off the bench after 78 minutes in a league defeat to Olmedo (2-1).

Francisco Fydriszewski made his first appearance for LDU Portoviejo in nearly a month after serving a ban. He scored in a 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Cuenca, capitalising on a horrific error from the opposing goalkeeper.

On 25 October, his team were defeated again with El Polaco playing the full 90 minutes as Portoviejo went down 0-2 to Barcelona SC. Portoviejo are said to be holding a raffle to help purchase on-loan Fydriszewski on a permanent basis from Newell’s.
