Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 19 October 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


INTERNATIONAL

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina came away from La Paz with a vital 1-2 win at altitude to make it two wins out of two for the ex-Newell’s man in World Cup Qualifiers. Lionel Messi played the full match.

Eduardo Berrizo’s Paraguay made it 4 points from 6 in the World Cup Qualifiers, holding on to beat Venezuela 0-1. The hero of the day was goalkeeper Antony Silva who saved a 95th minute penalty to ensure Paraguay left with all three points.

Tata Martino’s Mexico drew 2-2 with Algeria in an international friendly to maintain their unbeaten run which now stretches beyond a year.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United lost 0-1 at home to Wolves in the Premier League. Wolves’ goal was scored by Raúl Jimenéz who plays for Bielsa’s former captain Tata Martino at international level with Mexico.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi played the full 90 minutes in Barcelona’s 1-0 loss to Getafe, just four days after he played a full game for Argentina in Bolivia at altitude.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi was replaced after 88 minutes in Torino’s 2-3 home defeat to Cagliari.

Fernando Forestieri came on as a second half substitute in Udinese’s 3-2 win over Parma.

Nehuén Paz made the Bologna bench for their 3-4 home defeat to Sassuolo. It was the first time he was included in the named squad since January 2020.

Enzo Barrenechea was an unused substitute in Juventus u23s 1-1 draw with AlbinoLeffe in Serie C.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez came off the bench after 82 minutes in Ajax’s 5-1 win over Heerenveen.


RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce scored Spartak’s second goal in their 2-3 away win at FK Khimki in the Russian Premier League.


GREECE

Daniel Mancini came on as a 75th minute substitute in Aris Thessaloniki’s 1-0 win over Apollon Smyrnis in the Greek Premier Division.


SAUDI ARABIA

Éver Banega made his league debut for new club Al-Shabab, playing the full match in a 1-0 win over Abha as the new season got underway.


UNITED STATES

Maxi Urruti scored the winner in Montreal Impact’s 2-1 home win over Inter Miami. It’s Urruti’s second goal in October.

Milton Valenzuela played two full matches in the last week for Columbus Crew. He tasted defeat on 15 October as the Crew lost 2-1 to FC Cincinnati but on 18 October, they bounced back with a 3-1 win at home to New York City FC.


MEXICO

Nahuél Guzmán kept a clean sheet but was yellow carded in Tigres’ 0-2 away win at Cruz Azul.

Luis Leal came on as a sub after 66 minutes in Club Tijuana’s 2-0 defeat to Necaxa.

Andres Lillini’s Pumas went back to 2nd in the Liga MX with a 1-0 win over Toluca.


ECUADOR

Victor Figueroa was scoring and providing goals again this week as he claimed 1 goal and 3 assists in 2 games. On 14 October, he assisted both of Aucas’ goals in a 2-2 draw with Delfín while on 18 October, he assisted the first and then scored the second from the penalty spot in his team’s 2-1 win over Técnico Universitario.

Braian Rivero played for 71 minutes before being substituted in Independiente del Valle’s 3-2 win over LDU de Quito.
