Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 17th January 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 17th January 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United lost 0-1 at home to Brighton in the Premier League. That’s their third loss in a row but the Whites still sit in a safe 12th position.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi received the first red card of his Barcelona career in extra-time of the Supercopa de España on 17 January. Messi’s side lost 2-3 to Athletic Club.

Lucas Boyé was taken off injured early on in Elche’s 1-3 home defeat to Getafe on 11 January and subsequently missed their next game at Rayo Vallecano.


FRANCE

Mauricio Pochettino won his first career trophy as a manager, leading PSG to the French Trophée des Champions title against Marseille (2-1).

Following the celebrations, Pochettino was diagnosed with COVID-19 and missed their 0-1 away win at Angers in the league on 16 January.

Mauro Icardi scored in PSG’s 2-1 win over Marseille in the Trophée des Champions to make it 2 goals in 2 games under Pochettino. He was introduced as a 69th minute substitute in the 0-1 win at Angers.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi played for 62 minutes in Torino’s 0-0 draw with AC Milan in the Coppa Italia. Milan eventually won the game on penalties. In the league on 16 January, he was a 71st minute substitute in the 0-0 draw against Spezia.

Nehuén Paz (Bologna) was an unused substitute this week while Fernando Forestieri (Udinese) is injured.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez was an unused substitute again in Ajax’s 1-0 win over Feyenoord on 17 January. That’s four games in a row now where “Licha” hasn’t played.


GREECE

Daniel Mancini played the full match in Aris’ 0-1 defeat to AEK Athens on 14 January. On 17 January, he was taken off after 67 minutes in another 0-1 home defeat to Panathinaikos.


CYPRUS

Adrian Lucero played the full 90 minutes in Paralimni’s 1-0 win over AEL Limassol. Lucero was booked towards the end of the game. His side have moved out of the relegation zone in Cyprus after several good results recently.


SAUDI ARABIA

Ever Banega played a full 90 minutes for Al-Shabab in their 0-3 away win against Al-Ain in the Saudi Premier League on 14 January.

Cristian Lema was taken off after 62 minutes and received a yellow card in Damac’s 0-0 draw with Al Wehda on 15 January.


MEXICO

Nahuel Guzmán conceded two goals as Tigres surprisingly lost 2-0 away at Santos Laguna.

Andrés Lillini’s Pumas won 3-0 at home to Mazatlan FC.

Santiago Solari suffered his first loss as Club América manager, losing 1-0 away to Monterrey.


CHILE

Carlos Rotondi played for 69 minutes in Santiago Wanderers’ 3-0 win over Colo-Colo on 6 January.

Roberto Sensini’s Everton de Viña del Mar got back to winning ways, beating Audax Italiano 2-1 at home.

Martín Tonso played for 83 minutes in La Serena’s 2-2 draw away to Antofagasta on 11 January. On 15 January he was booked before being substituted after 53 minutes in the 0-3 home defeat to La Calera.
