Newell’s goalkeeper Iván Arboleda won’t want to watch the highlights of the River Plate game after his two errors allowed the opposition to claim the victory in Rosario on Sunday night.
Amidst a cracking atmosphere in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, Newell’s prevented a well-stacked River attack from scoring in the first-half and were in the game for 70 minutes until Arboleda’s three minutes of madness gifted River two goals. Before then, River had hit the post twice and were unusually ineffective in front of goal. While La Lepra had little to offer up the other end, River weren’t exactly firing on all cylinders and a point looked reachable with just 20 minutes to go.
That was until Arboleda’s first-touch from a backpass let him down, forcing him to clear it straight into the path of River substitute Juanfer Quintero who then passed the ball into an empty net. Just three minutes later, a shellshocked Arboleda parried a straightforward Roberto Rojas shot into his own net, confirming the victory for Marcelo Gallardo’s side.
New manager Javier Sanguinetti now has a week to prepare for the away trip to Talleres and after conceding 5 goals without reply in the last two games, there’s plenty to work on.
