Highlights: Argentinos Juniors 3-0 Newell’s

Argentinos Juniors celebrated a deserved win over Newell’s Old Boys in the second game of the Copa de la Liga’s Zone A.

Los Bichos were the stronger team throughout and Newell’s offered very little in opposing the home side’s superior attacking and defensive play. Paraguayan striker Gabriel Ávalos, who finished the game with a brace, opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, firing a long shot from outside the box past Iván Arboleda after Nicolás Castro had miscontrolled the ball in his own half.

19-year-old Matías Galarza scored the first goal of his professional career in the second-half to make it 2-0. The youngster looked to be in an offside position but the linesman disagreed and let the goal stand.

Argentinos’ third goal was representative of their superior performance throughout the match. Newell’s were hunted down in their own half by intense pressing and lost the ball before Reniero and Mac Allister combined to create a chance that eventually fell to Ávalos to bag his second of the match.

Newell’s had chances to pull a goal back in the last ten minutes but substitutes Balzi and García both wasted opportunities to score.
