Newell’s surrendered a two-goal lead in Mendoza on Saturday afternoon as Diego Flores’ Godoy Cruz came back in the second-half thanks to a Martín Ojeda brace.
In an all-action first-half, Manuel Capasso scored his first goal for La Lepra from a set-piece and Jonatan Cristaldo made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Justo Giani, on for the injured Ignacio Scocco, was hauled down in the box before half-time.
Godoy Cruz, playing in front of their own fans for the first time since early 2020 as stadiums in Argentina opened their gates again, were the much superior side in the second period and Ojeda was involved throughout. Flores, Marcelo Bielsa’s ex-assistant at Leeds United, might have been celebrating a comeback victory if it wasn’t for the heroics of Alan Aguerre in the Newell’s goal.
