Newell’s Old Boys got off to the perfect start in the new Liga AFA season, defeating Banfield away by two goals to one.
La Lepra’s goals were converted in the first-half with Juanchón García central to both moves. He ended the match with one goal & one assist (to Ramiro Sordo, the other goalscorer), leaving the judges with no doubts over who to give the Man of the Match award to.
Banfield scored a late consolation in injury-time form the penalty spot; VAR confirming that Ramiro Macagno committed a foul inside the box with seconds remaining on the clock.
With Newell’s missing the likes of Pablo Pérez, Martín Luciano and rising star Nicolás Castro only a late a substitute off the bench, Javier Sanguinetti will be hugely pleased with the performance put in by his youthful team to kick-start his second campaign in charge of The Lepers.
