Gustavo Velázquez joins Newell’s on-loan from Juárez of Mexico

The 30-year-old Paraguayan defender played under Newell’s manager Javier Sanguinetti at Sol de América.

Gustavo Velázquez has been signed on-loan by Newell’s Old Boys from the Mexican club FC Juárez.

A centre-back who knows Newell’s manager Javier Sanguinetti from his time at Sol de América, Velázquez came through the youth system at Cerro Porteño before also playing for Nacional. He moved to Mexico, first with Lobos BUAP before joining Juárez in 2019. He’s enjoyed the most consistent period of his career since moving to the Mexican top flight and has played 79 times for the Bravos de Juárez, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists.

At Newell’s, he’s likely to provide cover for the centre-back pairing of Willer Ditta and Cristian Lema and obviously a player that Sanguinetti trusts to reinforce the defence.

He has signed a one-year loan deal at Newell’s until 2022 and will join up with the squad after the Defensa y Justicia game on Thursday night.

Welcome, Gustavo!
