The 29-year-old unattached forward joins on a 1-year loan and last played for Universidad Católica of Chile.
Newell’s Old Boys have announced the signing of Lucas Melano.
The deal was ratified by AFA as a replacement signing due to the long-term injury suffered by Leonel Vangioni.
Melano was unattached after last playing for Universidad Católica of Chile earlier this year and joins on a 1-year loan deal with an exit clause in December.
The Córdobes forward started his career at Belgrano before joining Lanús where he won the Copa Sudamericana in 2013. That spell earned him a move to the MLS with Portland Timbers where he stayed for four years, with loans back to Belgrano and then Estudiantes towards the end of his time in the United States.
More recently, he has briefly played for San Lorenzo and Central Córdoba (Santiago del Estero) in the Argentine Primera Divisíon.
He will give Newell’s Old Boys another option in a misfiring attack short on goals.
There is an option to buy Melano at the end of the loan-deal should it go well.
Welcome to Newell’s, Lucas!
