Newell’s Old Boys have appointed Mauricio Larriera as the new manager for the 2024 season.
Larriera has extensive experience in South America, having managed clubs in Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina. He also had a stint in Qatar as head coach of Al-Wakrah. His time in Argentina comprises of a short campaign in charge of Godoy Cruz in the 2017-18 season where he left the Mendoza club with a 54% win record.
His main successes came after that; a trophy-laden two years at Peñarol in which the Carboneros won both the Clausura and the overall Championship title in 2021 along with a Supercopa. He most recently coached at Alianza Lima where his team went unbeaten up until the final championship match in which they lost to Universitario over two legs.
His new role at Newell’s Old Boys follows the departure of Gabriel Heinze, whose legacy is in-tact at the club despite a disappointing period as manager from a results point of view.
As the club moves forward under Larriera’s leadership, supporters and fans eagerly anticipate a renewed hunger on the pitch. The hope is that Larriera’s dynamic approach will inject growth and achievement into the Newell’s Old Boys squad. He will work with a new recruitment team, headed up by Director of Football Ariel Michaloutsos, in defining the group of players who will play in the 2024 Copa de la Liga which starts at the end of January.
Welcome to Newell’s, Mauricio!
