Lepers Abroad: week ending 8 March

Bielsa: praised by Danny Cowley after Leeds’ fifth win on the trot.

Welcome to our round-up for the week ending 8 March 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

Many ex-Newell’s players in Italy and France didn’t play last weekend as matches were postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

Marcelo Bielsa led Leeds United to their fifth win in a row with a 2-0 home victory over Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town. Bielsa’s team are now back on top of the league. Afterwards, opposition manager Danny Cowley had these words of praise for El Loco:

Cristian Battocchio played for 90 minutes in Stade Brestois’ 1-0 defeat to Stade de Reims in Ligue 1.

Enzo Barrenechea played for 90 minutes and was yellow carded in Juventus u19’s 1-2 defeat to Genoa u19s.

Nicolás Spolli was an unused substitute in Crotone’s 1-3 away win over Venezia in Serie B.

Lionel Messi scored the only goal of the match from the penalty spot in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Éver Banega played for 90 minutes and was yellow carded in Sevilla’s 2-2 draw with Atlético Madrid.

Lisandro Martínez played for 90 minutes in Ajax’s 1-3 away win at Heerenveen. Martínez has adapted well to a deep midfield role at Ajax after initially being developed as a centre-back.

Maurico Tévez played for 90 minutes before being substituted in AD Oliveirense’s 0-2 defeat to Braga B. Tévez has played six games for the third-tier Portuguese side but has yet to experience a win (4 losses, 2 draws).

Ezequiel Ponce scored and then was sent off in extra-time for two yellow cards in Spartak Moscow’s 3-2 win against rivals CSKA Moscow in the Russian Cup. On Monday, he was on the losing side as Spartak went down 0-1 to Krasnodar in the league.

Maxi Urruti continued his hot streak with two goals for Montreal Impact against his former club FC Dallas in a 2-2 draw in the MLS. Urruti now has 3 goals in 2 games for Montreal and is the MLS’ top scorer.

Milton Valenzuela was withdrawn after 46 minutes in Columbus Crew’s 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders.

Francisco Fydriszewski played for 90 minutes in LDU Portoviejo’s 2-1 win over Delfin SC. It was the first game since El Polaco moved to Portoviejo where he didn’t provide a goal or an assist.

Victor Figueroa played for 78 minutes before being substituted in Aucas’ 0-4 heavy defeat to Emelec.
