Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 30 November 2020

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 30 November 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

SPAIN

Lionel Messi played a full 90 minutes for Barcelona in their 4-0 win over Osasuna. Messi scored the fourth goal, removing his shirt to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys shirt from 1993. The shirt, featuring the number 10 on the back, was a tribute to late Diego Armando Maradona who died on 25 November.

Messi’s goal was scarily similar to the one that Diego Maradona scored on his debut for Newell’s Old Boys in 1993.

Lucas Boyé had an eventful first-half for Elche in their 1-1 draw against Cádiz. He was yellow carded early on, opened the scoring after 38 minutes and then was sent off just before half-time. His 10 Elche teammates managed to hang on in the second half to secure a draw.

ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United defeated Everton 0-1 at Goodison Park thanks to a goal from Raphinha. It’s the first time Leeds have won at Everton since 1990.

FRANCE

Cristian Battocchio came on as a 81st minute substitute in Stade Brest’s 0-2 away win at Metz.

Mauro Icardi came off the bench after 85 minutes to make his first appearence for PSG in two months in their 2-2 draw with Bordeaux.

Nehuén Paz was an unused substitute in Bologna’s 1-0 win over Crotone and their earlier loss to Spezia (2-4) in the Coppa Italia on 25 November.

Fernando Forestieri played for 77 minutes in Udinese’s 0-1 defeat to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia. On 29 November, he started and scored his side’s third goal in their 1-3 away win at Lazio in Serie A, dedicating the goal to Diego Maradona.

NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez came on as a 66th minute substitute in Ajax’s 3-1 win over FC Midtylland on 25 November in the Champions League while he played a full 90 minutes at centre-back in their 0-5 away win against FC Emmen in the league on 28 November.

RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce completed 90 minutes for Spartak Moscow as they defeated Rotor Volgograd 2-0 in the league.

GREECE

CYPRUS

Emanuel Dening and Adrian Lucero both played in Enosis Neon Paralimniou’s 4-2 defeat to Temori Ketsbaia’s Anorthosis Famagusta. Lucero played the full game but Dening was substituted after 61 minutes.

SAUDI ARABIA

Cristian Lema and Éver Banega went head to head in Saudi Arabia with Banega’s Al-Shabab coming out on top against Lema’s Damac. Banega provided an assist in a 2-1 win for the home side.

UNITED STATES

Milton Valenzuela helped Columbus Crew to another win in the MLS Playoffs, playing a full 90 minutes at left-back in a 2-0 win over Nashville SC on 29 November.

MEXICO

Nahuel Guzmán bounced back from conceding 3 goals to Cruz Azul on 27 November by keeping a clean sheet in the return leg on 29 November as Tigres won 0-1. It wasn’t enough to stop Tigres crashing out of the Liga MX playoffs and they’ll now concentrate on a match against New York City FC in the CONCACAF Champions League on 15 December.

Andres Lillini’s Pumas will meet Cruz Azul in the Liga MX Playoff semi-finals after dispatching of Pachuca by a single goal over two legs last week (0-1 aggregate).

ECUADOR

Victor Figueroa scored his 12th goal of the season in Aucas’ 4-1 home win against Orense SC.

Francisco Fydriszewski played a full 90 minutes and received a yellow card in LDU Portoviejo’s 2-1 win over Universidad Católica del Ecuador.

Braian Rivero replaced another ex-Newell’s player, Lorenzo Faravelli, after 82 minutes in Independiente del Valle’s 0-0 draw with Nacional in the Copa Librtadores on 25 November. In the league on 28 November, Rivero started but was taken off after 69 minutes IDV lost 1-0 away at Delfín.
