Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 29th March 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 29th March 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

Last week was an international week, meaning many major leagues paused so that national teams could play their fixtures.

INTERNATIONAL

Tata Martino‘s Mexico were beaten 1-0 by Wales in an international friendly on 27 March in Cardiff. It’s only the second time that El Tri have suffered a defeat under El Tata.

Milton Valenzuela played the full 90 minutes in Argentina U23s 0-1 win over Japan U23s on 26 March.

Enzo Cabrera was introduced as a late 83rd minute substitute in the return game on 29 March as Argentina U23s lost 3-0 to Japan U23s. Valenzuela was an unused substitute in that game. Cabrera was an unused substitute in the first tie on 26 March.

No South American senior teams, such as Eduardo Berizzo‘s Paraguay or Lionel Scaloni‘s Argentina were in action last week due to the South American World Cup Qualifiers being cancelled.

Luis Leal played the full 90 minutes as São Tomé and Príncipe lost 3-1 away to Ghana in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers on 28 March.

PERU

Horacio Orzán made his debut for Melgar, coming on as a 66th minute substitute in the 3-0 win over AD Cantolao on 27 March.
