Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 28 September

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 28 September 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United had Patrick Bamford to thank for a late header that gave them a 1-0 win in the Yorkshire Derby against Sheffield United. Leeds now have 6 points from 9 and sit in 6th position in the Premier League.

Lionel Messi scored from the penalty spot for Barcelona in their 4-0 win over Villarreal as La Liga returned.

Lucas Boyé made his debut for Elche, coming on as a substitute after 87 minutes in their 0-3 home defeat to Real Sociedad.

Mauro Icardi was back in the goals again, scoring a brace in PSG’s 0-2 away win at Reims in Ligue 1.

Cristian Battocchio was a late sub for Brest in their 3-2 away defeat to Angers.

Cristian Ansaldi was an unused substitute in Torino’s 2-4 home defeat to Atalanta.

Fernando Forestieri made his debut for Udinese, coming on as a substitute after 62 minutes as the Zebrette lost 1-0 away to Hellas Verona.

Nicolás Spolli was an unused substitute as newly promoted Crotone lost 0-2 at home to AC Milan.

Lisandro Martínez was an unused substitute in Ajax’s 2-1 win over Vitesse.

Ezequiel Ponce came on after 52 minutes as a substitute in Spartak’s 0-2 away win at Tambov.

Daniel Mancini was a 65th minute substitute and was yellow carded in Aris Thessaloniki’s 2-2 draw with PAS Giannina.

Adrian Lucero played for 71 minutes before being replaced in Enosis Neon Paralimniou’s 2-1 loss to Karmiotissa Polemidion. Fellow ex-Newell’s man Emanuel Dening was an unused sub. Enosis are bottom of the Cypriot First Division having lost all five opening games.

Maxi Urruti returned to action with Montreal Impact after a month out. He was a late sub in the Impact’s 3-1 defeat to New England Revolution on 23 September and on 27 September he played the full game in another defeat, this time going down 4-1 to the New York Red Bulls.

Franco Escobar was the man of the match in Atlanta United’s 1-0 win over FC Dallas on 24 September but a consistent run of form still eludes the side as they followed up that win with a 2-0 defeat to the Chicago Fire in which Escobar played the full game at centre back.

It was also one win and one defeat for Milton Valenzuela who played a full game in the 2-1 win for Columbus Crew against Minnesota United on 24 September. He was rested a few days later against Toronto, appearing as a second half substitute in a 3-1 defeat.

Nahuél Guzmán was the man of the match in the Clásico Regio as his team Tigres came out on top against rivals Monterrey, winning 0-2 away.

UNAM Pumas who are coached by ex-Newell’s youth player Andrés Lillini dropped to fourth in the Liga MX after an amazing run of form at the start of the season. This week, they were beaten 2-0 by Club León and then fought for a 1-1 draw against Club Necaxa.

Braian Rivero was an unused substitute in Independiente del Valle’s shock 4-1 defeat against Atlético Junior in the Copa Libertadores while he was a late substitute in the league on 27 September, coming off the bench with just minutes to go in the 1-1 draw against Barcelona SC.

Victor Figueroa scored again for Aucas but it wasn’t enough to give his side three points as they lost 3-2 away to ten-man Olmedo.
