Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 23 November 2020

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 23 November 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.


INTERNATIONAL

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina kept their unbeaten run going in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers with a 0-2 win away against Peru in Lima. Captain Lionel Messi played the full 90 minutes.

Eduardo Berizzo’s Paraguay drew 2-2 at home to Bolivia. Toto’s side also remain unbeaten in the qualifying campaign.

Tata Martino’s defeated Japan 0-2 in an international friendly.


ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United were held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Arsenal at Elland Road in the English Premier League.


SPAIN

Lionel Messi played a full 90 minutes for Barcelona in their 1-0 away defeat to rivals Atlético Madrid in La Liga.

Lucas Boyé was substituted in injury-time but played for most of Elche’s 1-1 away draw at Levante. The forward received a yellow card in the first half.


FRANCE

Cristian Battocchio came on as a 73rd minute substitute in Stade Brest’s emphatic 4-1 win at home to St Etienne.


ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi scored from the spot to put Torino 2-0 up against his former club Inter but the Nerazzurri battled back to win 4-2, scoring four goals in 26 minutes.

Fernando Forestieri was an unused substitute in Udinese’s 1-0 win over Genoa while Nehuén Paz also didn’t get off the bench in Bologna’s 2-1 away win at Sampdoria.


NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez came on as a 69th minute substitute in Ajax’s big 5-0 win over Heracles in the Eredivisie.


RUSSIA

No goals last week for Ezequiel Ponce who played the full 90 minutes in Spartak Moscow’s 1-1 draw with Dynamo Moscow.


GREECE

Daniel Mancini was a 76th minute substitute for Aris Thessaloniki who continued their good run of form with a 0-1 away win over Panetolikos.


SAUDI ARABIA

Cristian Lema played a full 90 minutes for Damac who were beaten 0-2 at home to Al Ain in the Saudi Premier League. That’s now 3 losses and 1 draw for Lema in Saudi.


UNITED STATES

Milton Valenzuela helped Columbus Crew overcome the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Playoffs, playing a full 90 minutes at left-back in a 3-2 win for the Crew.


MEXICO

Nahuél Guzmán was accused of time wasting and feigning injury in the dying moments of Tigres game against Toluca in the Liga MX Apertura Playoffs. He ended the match on the winning side, with Tigres winning 2-1.


CHILE

Martín Tonso made his debut from the bench coming on as a substitute after 63 minutes for new side Deportes La Serena who secured a vital 1-3 away win against Palestino. Another ex-Newell’s man, Rodrigo Salinas, also made his debut for La Serena from the bench and scored their 3rd goal on 83 minutes.


ECUADOR

Victor Figueroa reached his 11th goal of the league season by converting a penalty in Aucas’ 3-3 away to Deportivo Cuenca in the LigaPro Serie A.

Francisco Fydriszewski also grabbed his 11th of the season in the same league. El Polaco was on the scoresheet deep into injury time but it was only a consolation for his team LDU Portoviejo who lost 1-2 at home to Orense SC.

Braian Rivero played the full 90 minutes in Independiente del Valle’s 1-0 win over Técnico Universitario.
