Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 16th May 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 16th May 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

We feature players who have scored, assisted, were involved in an incident or reached a landmark in the previous week. We’ll also track the progress of ex-Newell’s players or coaches who are now managers, where relevant.

Bielsa’s Leeds take no prisoners at Turf Moor

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United put four goals past Burnley on 15 May, running out 0-4 winners against Sean Dyche’s side. Leeds stay in 10th in the Premier League with two games remaining.

Pochettino’s PSG could still do the double

Mauricio Pochettino‘s Paris St Germain reached the Coupe de France final after a penalty shootout win over Montpellier on 12 May. After a major slip-up by league leaders Lille, PSG could also snatch the Ligue 1 title from them after their 4-0 win over Stade de Reims on 16 May closed the gap to 1 point ahead of next weekend’s finale.

Messi reaches 30 goals for the season… but Barca are out of the La Liga title race

Lionel Messi scored his 30th goal of the season last week but he couldn’t prevent Barcelona from ending the week with just one point, eliminating them from the race for La Liga.

On 11 May, he scored the opener in a 3-3 draw away at Levante.

On 17 May, Messi scored a rare header against Celta Vigo but Barcelona lost the game 1-2, ending their chances of winning the La Liga trophy in Spain this year.

Lisandro Martínez scores for Ajax in 1-3 win over Vitesse

Lisandro Martínez celebrated being called up to Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad by adding the third goal for Ajax in their 1-3 win over Vitesse on 16 May. Ajax are already champions in Holland but showed no signs of winding down. Martínez got on the end of a low corner to seal the win for the Amsterdam side.

Maxi Urruti the game winner as Houston beat Sporting Kansas City

Maxi Urruti scored the only goal of the game as Houston Dynamo defeated Sporting Kansas City 1-0 in the MLS on 13 May. Urruti finished off a nice team move by moving beyond a defender to lift the ball over the opposition keeper.

Gabriel Heinze celebrates late win over CF Montreal

Gabriel Heinze‘s Atlanta United left it until the 94th minute to score against CF Montreal on 16 May (1-0). Joaquín Torres was on the bench for Montreal but didn’t see any game time. Heinze was animated throughout the game, celebrating the injury-time winner passionately with his staff.

Solari’s Club América out of Liga MX Playoffs with head held high

Santiago Solari‘s Club América were knocked out of the Liga MX Playoffs by Pachuca on away goals after a 5-5 aggregate two-legged affair. América won the second leg 4-2 on 16th May but were beaten 3-1 by Pachuca in the opening leg away from home. América had finished 2nd in the regular league table and although they go no further in the season, the fans have been impressed by Solari’s reign so far.

Lorenzo Faravelli converts penalty in win for IDV over Olmedo

Lorenzo Faravelli put away a penalty in Independiente del Valle’s 1-3 win over Olmedo on 15 May.

El Polaco Fydriszewski scores a brace in brilliant week for Bidoglio’s Aucas

On 14 May, Héctor Bidoglio‘s Aucas scored a 2-1 win over group leaders FBC Melgar of Peru in the Copa Sudamericana. It was their first win in the competition and they remain in bottom position. In the league on 16 May, ex-Newell’s forward Francisco Fydriszewski had a hand in all three goals, scoring twice, in a 1-3 win over LDU Quito. Two brilliant finishes from the man known as ‘El Polaco’.
