Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 12th April 2021

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 12th April 2021.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

ENGLAND

Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United experienced perhaps their greatest victory of the season on 10 April, beating league leaders Manchester City 1-2 away and with only 10 men on the field after Liam Cooper was sent off in the first-half. It was a remarkable showing from Bielsa’s side who had Stuart Dallas to thank for scoring both goals.

SPAIN

Lionel Messi played a full 90 minutes in Barcelona’s 2-1 El Clásico defeat to Real Madrid on 10 April but couldn’t claw Ronald Koeman’s side back into it after going 2-0 down.

Lucas Boyé played a full 90 minutes in Elche’s 3-1 away defeat at Huesca in La Liga on 9 April.

FRANCE

Mauricio Pochettino‘s PSG came away with a vital first leg win against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on 7 April (2-3). In the league on 10 April, they won away at Strasbourg, scoring four goals in a game that finished 1-4.

Mauro Icardi missed both matches as he continues to recover from injury.

ITALY

Cristian Ansaldi played a full 90 minutes in Torino’s 0-1 victory over Udinese on 10 April.

Fernando Forestieri came on as a 65th minute substitute for Udinese in that game against Ansaldi’s Torino.

Enzo Barrenechea started and played for 80 minutes in Juventus U19’s 0-1 away victory at Milan U19s on 10 April.

NETHERLANDS

Lisandro Martínez played two games in a week. First, he started for Ajax in the 1-2 defeat to AS Roma in the UEFA Europa League on 8 April while on 11 April, he started and played a full game in the 0-1 win over Willem II in the Eredivisie. He received a yellow card in both games.

GREECE

Daniel Mancini started, played for 69 minutes and scored a consolation goal for Aris in their 1-3 home defeat to AEK Athens on 11 April.

CYPRUS

Emanuel Dening and Adrian Lucero both started in Paralimni’s 1-0 defeat to APOEL on 10 April. Lucero was taken off at half-time but Dening played the full game.

TURKEY

Nehuén Paz was limited to brief appearances off the bench last week for Kayserispor. He came on after 89 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Trabzonspor on 6 April while he was an 86th minute substitute in his club’s 0-1 home defeat to Antalyaspor on 11 April.

RUSSIA

Ezequiel Ponce got 12 minutes off the bench for Spartak Moscow in their 2-0 defeat to rivals Lokomotiv on 11 April in the Russian Premier League.

CROATIA

Tobias Donsanti came on as an 87th minute substitute for NK Solin in a NK Croatia Zmijavci on 10 April.

SAUDI ARABIA

Éver Banega was involved in every goal in Al-Shabab’s 1-4 victory away at Al Batin on 10 April. The creative midfielder scored twice and assisted twice as the away side remained neck-and-neck at the top of the Saudi Premier League with rivals Al-Hilal.

This solo effort was the pick of the day for Banega:

UNITED STATES

Milton Valenzuela played the full 90 minutes in Columbus Crew’s impressive 0-4 victory over Esteli of Nicaragua in the CONCACAF Champions League on 9 April.

MEXICO

Nahuel Guzmán conceded three goals in Tigres’ home defeat (1-3) to Santiago Solari’s Club América on 11 April.

Solari’s América are still chasing Cruz Azul who have won 12 out of 14 games in the Liga MX so far.

Andrés Lillini‘s Pumas won 0-1 away at Necaxa on 10 April.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Lisandro Cabrera made his debut for Club Deportivo Pantoja in the CONCACAF Champions League on 9 April but he was on the end of a 0-3 home defeat to the Monterrey of Mexico. Cabrera started the game and played the full 90 minutes.

ECUADOR

Héctor Bidoglio‘s Aucas moved into the Copa Sudamericana Group Stages with a big 0-3 victory away at Guayaquil City in the second leg of their preliminary round on 9 April.

Victor Figueroa started and played the whole game for Aucas, setting up both of Luis Cano’s goals.

Francisco Fydriszewski scored the other goal in the game, with a tidy finish after 20 minutes. ‘El Polaco’ was taken off after 63 minutes by Bidoglio.

In a bizarre turn of events, Aucas were forced to field just 7 players in their league game against Barcelona SC on 12 April after a COVID-19 outbreak at the club. Neither Fydriszewski or Figueroa were involved and the game was cancelled after 16 minutes with Barcelona gaining the victory.

Lorenzo Faravelli scored both goals as Independiente del Valle won the first leg of their Copa Libertadores playoff against Brazilian giants Gremio on 10 April. Faravelli is on a serious run of form with IDV at the moment and is chipping in with goals and assists in most of their games.

PERU

Horacio Orzán played a full 90 minutes for FBC Melgar in their 3-2 win over Carlos Mannucci in the qualifiers for the Copa Sudamericana on 9 April. Later on 12 April in the league, he was a 79th minute substitute in the 0-0 draw with Ayacucho.

PARAGUAY

Luis Leal played a full 90 minutes for Sol de America who were defeated 1-2 at home by Nacional on 11 April. He received a yellow card in the game.
