Lepers Abroad: Gameweek ending 12 October 2020

Welcome to our round-up for the Gameweek ending 12 October 2020.

Lepers Abroad refers to the performances of ex-Newell’s players and coaches, along with well-known fans of Newell’s Old Boys, who now ply their trade outside of Argentina.

INTERNATIONAL

Lionel Messi was Argentina’s goalscorer in a 1-0 win over Ecuador as the South American CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers got underway. Messi tucked away a 13th-minute penalty at La Bombonera to help Lionel Scaloni‘s Argentina gain three points on the road to Qatar.

Eduardo Berizzo’s Paraguay played out a 2-2 home draw against Peru, who named ex-Newell’s defender Luis Advíncula as their captain, in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers.

Tata Martino’s Mexico shocked the Netherlands in a friendly, beating them 0-1 in Frank De Boer’s first game in charge of his country. Both managers were in charge of Atlanta United before their current job, with El Tata the more successful, winning MLS Cup in 2018 while De Boer failed to make an impact.

UNITED STATES

Maxi Urruti was a 61st minute substitute in Montreal Impact’s 1-2 away win at Columbus Crew. In the same game, Milton Valenzuela played for 69 minutes before being withdrawn due to a knock.

Franco Escobar was Atlanta United’s strongest player according to SofaScore but he couldn’t prevent his team from losing 0-1 at home to the NY Red Bulls.

MEXICO

Luis Leal started but was withdrawn after 62 minutes in Club Tijuana’s 2-0 away defeat to Santos Laguna.

CHILE

Carlos Rotundi, on loan at Santiago Wanderers from Newell’s, scored this delightful lob in injury time to draw the game at 2-2 in the Clásico Porteño against rivals Everton de Viña del Mar. Rotundi now has 6 goals and 5 assists for Wanderers, who sit in 12th in the Chilean Primera División.
