Newell’s Old Boys went out of the Copa Argentina on Wednesday night, losing by a late winner to Talleres in bizarre weather conditions in San Luis.
A heavy windstorm had a huge impact on the game, blowing the corner flags to the ground and pushing the airborne ball in unnatural directions meaning it was difficult for the players to judge set-pieces and crosses.
Newell’s took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Juan Manuel García was fouled in the box and then stepped up to the slot the resulting penalty past ex-Newell’s keeper Alan Aguerre in the Talleres net.
La Lepra continued to lead for the first 25 minutes of the second-half until Willer Ditta inadvertently put the ball into his own net to gift Talleres a way back into the game.
With the wind continuing to disrupt play, substitute Juan Cruz Giacone found himself free in the box with just three minutes remaining and fired past Lautaro Morales to secure a late smash and grab for La T.
Newell’s fans, many of whom had travelled over 10 hours to see the team in San Luis, were faced with a disappointing journey home after another cup exit. The focus now turns to the appointment of a new permanent manager and a home game in the league against 2nd-placed Gimnasia on Sunday.
