Newell’s Old Boys became the early league leaders on Tuesday night after leaving Córdoba with all three points in a tight game against Talleres.
Ramiro Sordo scored the fourth fastest goal in the history of the club when he put The Lepers ahead after just 26 seconds. Chances came and went aplenty for both teams and Newell’s were handed a further advantage just before the end of the first-half when Rafael Pérez of Talleres was handed a red card for an elbow.
Newell’s could have doubled their lead with 5 minutes remaining but substitute Nicolás Castro, who is on the verge of a move to the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, saw his penalty saved by Guido Herrera.
The centre-back pairing of Willer Ditta and Gustavo Velázquez, who was Man of the Match, had to hold strong to prevent the home side from equalising. Javier Sanguinetti’s emotional reaction at the final whistle showed how important a victory it was for Newell’s who now top the table after 3 games.
