Highlights: Santos 1-2 Newell’s

Marcos Portillo was the hero as Newell’s sealed a famous first-ever victory in Brazil at Santos on Tuesday night.

Another 3 points in the Copa Sudamericana means Newell’s are already through to the Round of 16 and are the only team with a perfect record in the competition of 5 wins from 5.

Newell’s could have won by more and were the better side in Santos, drawing a number of saves from João Paulo in both halves. Juan Sforza opened the scoring for La Lepra on the stroke of half-time with a clever toe-poked shot amongst a crowded box. Newell’s led for most of the second period until referee Jesus Valenzuela awarded the home side a penalty with ten minutes to go, judging Guillermo Ortíz as having been the culprit for a push in the box. Marcos Leonardo slotted home to level the score.

Brian Aguirre thought he had won it for Newell’s on 87 minutes but VAR overruled the goal for offside. Newell’s would push hard for the winner and it came in the 8th minute of injury-time when Marcos Portillo swerved a beautiful shot from outside the box into the top corner for his 3rd goal of the competition.

The Newell’s bench erupted and the thousands of fans who made the 2,000km trip from Rosario to São Paulo left the stadium in full-voice, celebrating the club’s first ever competitive win in Brazil.
