Newell’s Old Boys made it two wins in a row after overcoming Estudiantes by a single goal at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa on Saturday evening (12 December).
Although La Lepra grabbed all three points in their first game of the ‘Complement’ Phase in the Copa Diego Maradona, Estudiantes dominated the game in large parts, winning the share of possession.
They also had over four times as many shots as the home team, attempting 21 shots to the 5 attempted by Newell’s Old Boys. Only 3 of those 21 shots attempted by the away side were on target. Looking at that stat, it’s easy to see why they still haven’t scored a goal since March.
Jerónimo Cacciabue’s 22nd minute long range effort separated the teams.
Both sides ended the game with 10 men – Manuel Guanini receiving his second yellow card on 72 minutes while Estudiantes’ Carlo Lattanzio received a straight red in injury-time.
