Newell’s Old Boys recorded a home win over Central Córdoba (Santiago del Estero) on Monday night as the Copa de la Liga got underway.
The Lepers took the lead in the first period when Gustavo Canto redirected a dangerous cross into his own net. Newell’s went down to ten men in the second-half; Jherson Mosquera receiving a deserved second booking for a bad tackle.
A man down, Heinze’s team rallied to put the game to bed with Brian Aguirre scoring a wonderful individual effort on 82 minutes. There could have even been a third for Newell’s but Matías Mansilla’s impressive save from Iván Gómez in the dying embers.
