Highlights: Newell’s 1-0 San Lorenzo

Jorge Recalde’s second goal in consecutive games was enough to give Newell’s an impressive win over high-flying San Lorenzo at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa on Monday evening.

Newell’s Old Boys put in their best performance of the season so far under Gabriel Heinze, dominating possession and attacking with a freedom that had been missing in previous games.

Brian Aguirre showed once again why he is now an undisputed starter in the team with a number of marauding runs on the right flank. In the first-half, he put the San Lorenzo defence under pressure on numerous occasions with his quick feet and dangerous deliveries across the six-yard box.

At the other end, San Lorenzo, who started this matchday as league leaders, looked lost and had to put all of the team’s resources into defending.

The only goal of the game came with just 15 minutes remaining. Jeremías Pérez Tica, last season’s top scorer in the Reserva division, came on for his full debut and floated an inviting ball towards the back post finding Jorge Recalde who made no mistake from close range with a side-footed volley that sent the ball into the roof of the net.

Recalde removed his shirt in ecstasy and took the plaudits from the home crowd who are now becoming more convinced of his prowess in front of goal.

San Lorenzo upped a gear after conceding but never looked like getting back into the game despite Lucas Hoyos being called into action twice near the end.

When the final whistle blew, Newell’s manager Gabriel Heinze pumped his fists and he’ll surely feel that this team is now starting to play to his instructions and ideas.
