Newell’s Old Boys made it consecutive 1-0 wins at home thanks to a Juan Manuel García penalty on Wednesday afternoon at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa.
The Lepers were helped by Banfield going down to 10 men in the first-half; Gregorio Tanco receiving two yellow cards and his marching orders courtesy of referee Patricio Loustau.
The second-half was dominated by Newell’s but it took the introduction of Nicolás Castro to really change things and it was his fruitful ball into the path of Juan Manuel García that drew the foul leading to the penalty. García stepped up himself to take it and sent the keeper the wrong way.
Castro or García could have made it two late on, both missing close-range chances which were saved by Banfield’s last line of defence, goalkeeper Enrique Bologna.
Newell’s are now in a very promising position to qualify from Zona A of the Copa Binance with 22 points from 11 games but it’s the leaders Racing Club up next for La Lepra at El Cilindro on Sunday night.
