Newell’s Old Boys suffered a 2-0 defeat against Godoy Cruz in the Copa de la Liga, Zone B, on Thursday at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. Daniel Barrea scored a goal for Godoy Cruz towards the end of the first half, and Tomás Conechny, a midfielder, added another in the second half.
Godoy Cruz played well, particularly in the first half, where their midfielders, full-backs, and forward Barrea displayed quality play in the opponent’s half. They threatened with an early long-range shot by Hernán López, which narrowly missed the right post.
Newell’s Old Boys had more possession and had a clear chance in the 12th minute, but Diego Rodríguez’s save denied them. Godoy Cruz also missed a clear opportunity in the 27th minute when Barrea set up Hernán López, who was alone with the goalkeeper but missed the chance.
Godoy Cruz took the lead in the 36th minute with a well-executed play, involving Galdames, Fernández, and Barrea, who finished expertly. In the second half, Godoy Cruz continued to dominate and had several clear chances, including a shot by Norberto Fernández that hit the crossbar.
Newell’s managed a good shot from substitute Panchito González in the 31st minute of the second-half, but Rodríguez made the save. However, Godoy Cruz sealed the match in the 78th minute when Conechny scored after a series of passes.
With this victory, Godoy Cruz climbed to the top of the Zone B table alongside Belgrano, both with 18 points, solidifying their position for qualification to the knockouts of the tournament.
